Full guide ›Tithi तिथी
A lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. There are 30 in a month, and the one current at sunrise names the day.
Paksha पक्ष
Each month has two halves: shuddha (bright, waxing) and vadya (dark, waning). Marathi dates read "month, paksha, tithi".
Nakshatra नक्षत्र
One of 27 star divisions of the sky. The Moon spends about a day in each, and it matters for muhurat and naming.
Yoga and Karana योग व करण
Yoga comes from the Sun and Moon together (27 kinds); karana is half a tithi (11 kinds). With tithi, var and nakshatra they make the five limbs of the panchang.
Rahu Kaal राहुकाळ
About 90 minutes of the daytime, different each weekday, that many people avoid for new beginnings.
Choghadiya चौघडिया
Day and night are each split into eight parts rated good (Amrit, Shubh, Labh), neutral (Char) or bad (Kaal, Rog, Udveg), used to pick a time quickly.
Adhik maas अधिक मास
An extra lunar month added about every 32 months to keep festivals in their seasons. 2026 had an Adhik Jyeshtha.
Sade-teen muhurta साडेतीन मुहूर्त
Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Dasara and half of Diwali Padwa: days auspicious from sunrise to sunset.

About the Marathi calendarमराठी दिनदर्शिकेविषयी
The Marathi calendar is lunisolar. Months run from one Amavasya to the next (amanta), and each is split into a bright half, शुद्ध (shuddha), and a dark half, वद्य (vadya). The year begins on Gudi Padwa and is counted in the Shaka era, with a name from the sixty-year cycle of samvatsaras. Every page here shows the English date next to the Marathi tithi, so you can read either at a glance.
All dates are calculated from the positions of the Sun and Moon for Mumbai. For 2026 we checked them against the Government of Maharashtra holiday notification. How we calculate.
Questionsप्रश्नोत्तरे
What is the Marathi calendar called?
In Marathi a calendar is a dindarshika (दिनदर्शिका), and the almanac with tithis and timings is the panchang (पंचांग). Wall calendars that combine both are found in almost every Marathi home.
When does the Marathi New Year begin?
On Gudi Padwa, the first day of Chaitra. In 2026 it is on Thursday, 19 March 2026; In 2027 it is on Wednesday, 7 April 2027.
What do shuddha and vadya mean?
Shuddha (शुद्ध) is the bright half of a lunar month, when the Moon waxes towards Pournima. Vadya (वद्य) is the dark half, when it wanes towards Amavasya. "Bhadrapad Shuddha 4" is the fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapad.
How is the Marathi calendar different from the North Indian (Hindi) calendar?
Marathi months end on Amavasya (amanta), while North Indian months end on Pournima (purnimanta). Festival dates are the same, but the dark half of a month has a different name: Marathi "Shravan Vadya" is North Indian "Bhadrapad Krishna".
Which place are the timings for?
All times are for Mumbai in IST. Sunrise elsewhere in Maharashtra differs by up to about 25 minutes; see the table on this page or the sunrise tool.
Is the app free?
Yes. Install it from this site on Android, iPhone or a computer. It works offline, needs no account and does not track you.
