Shiv Jayanti marks the birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivneri fort in 1630, founder of Swarajya and the most revered figure in Maharashtra's history.

Two dates

After a long public discussion the state adopted 19 February as the official date. Many mandals continue to celebrate on the tithi, so there are often two celebrations each year.

Celebrations

Processions with the Maharaj's portrait, dhol-tasha and lezim, powada ballads and a cradle ceremony (palna) at Shivneri, the fort of his birth, and in towns across the state.

Visit the forts

Many people spend the day at a fort such as Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad or Sinhagad and join clean-up drives.

How the date is fixed

The Government of Maharashtra observes 19 February (date of birth 19 February 1630). Many organisations also celebrate by tithi, Phalgun Vadya Tritiya, shown here for the Mumbai sunrise.

Dates are calculated for Mumbai. A printed panchang from another city or tradition can differ by a day. For rituals, follow your family priest.
